1.图表分析作文的种类

图表就是数字、图像传达信息的一种形式,图表分析作文就是将这些数字、图像所包含的信息转换成传神表意的说明文字。

图表的种类很多,一般把各种数字资料,按照一定的顺序,通过表格形式表现出来的叫表(table),利用点、线、图等把信息资料通过图像表现出来的叫图(graph或chart),常用的图形有柱形图(bar graph),曲线图(line graph),圆形图(circular graph),图解图(diagram),饼形或百分比图(pie or percentage graph),象形图(pictorial graph),流程图(flow chart)等等。

2.图表分析作文的写作要领

2.1. 读懂标题,然后根据主题进行分析。虽然文章的中心思想和细节是通过图表来表示的,但同一张图表,如果命题不同,作者观察、分析问题的角度就有所不同,写出的短文也可能完全不同。请看下面两个圆形图:

上面两张图如果命题为“The Similarities and Differences of the Two Marketing Concepts”,本文可以首先对两张图分别进行说明,对两种观念的异同进行比较,然后得出结论;如果命题为“The Development of Marketing Concept”,本文的重点则偏重于市场营销观念的变化及其变化的原因。写作时可首先指出两种观念的重点虽然明显不同,但后者显然脱胎于前者,然后再分析这种观念变化的原因。请比较下面两篇文章:

The Similarities and Differences of the Two Marketing Concepts

Let us take a look at the two circular graphs and compare the similarities and differences of the two marketing concepts.

The concepts illustrated in Fig.1and Fig.2 are roughly the same in their main business mentality and tactics.Both are new and advanced concepts in business administration.Moreover,

both lay stress on an orientation predominated by market demand.The latter,however,is also quite different from the former.First,the marketing focal point in Fig.1 is not the same as the in Fig.2.In the former,meeting consumers' needs and making a profit form the basis of business operations,while in the latter social long-term interests are also taken into account.Second,the former only considers two aspects of the problem in supplying products and services. But in contrast,the latter has to achieve a better balance between the three aspects—business profit,consumer demand and public social interests.Therefore,the latter is more advanced and more beneficial to social development.In addition,it has a more practical and revolutionary significance.

The Developm ent of Marketing Concept

Let us take a look at the two circular graphs and analyze the causes for the development of marketing concepts.

Fig.2 is quite different from Fig.1,but is obviously born out of Fig.1.The former refers to the concept predominated by market demand,whose stress is laid on the link between consumer demand and business profit,while the latter stands for the one led by society and market demand,which emphasizes the balance between social public interests,consumer demand and business profit.

Some reasons may account for the development of marketing concept.First,consumer demand is not always in agreement with social long-term interests.For example,when household appliances with great power consumption do not accord with the demands of economy on electricity,companies should consider improving on the product from social long-term interests.Second,meeting consumer demand on short-term basis is no longer business standard of conduct.A company,which can meet bothconsumers current demands and social long-term interests is more welcomed.Finally,in commodity production,companies should pay attention to environmental protection and ecological balance,because they are closely related to consumers and society.

It is just because of these that comes the development of marketing concept.

2.2.仔细分析图表,尽可能正确理解图表的真正含义。由于是对数字和图像进行分析、说明,仔细分析文字说明和数字表达就成为写好图表分析作文的关键。只有在对图表完全理解的基础上,才能对其进行分析、比较,从中发现某种规律,得出某种结论。因此,要写好图表分析作文,不仅需要较强的语言表达能力,还要有一定的观察、分析能力,一定的想象力和逻辑思维能力。请看下图:

要写好该曲线图分析作文,关键要抓住科技进步与生产力发展之间的关系。本文可分三段来写,第一段说明该曲线图反映的总情况,第二段根据图上反映的信息举例说明,并归纳出其规律,第三段通过分析写出读图表后的想法或评论。请看例文③:

The line graph in Fig.3 shows the relationship between scientific and technological development and productivity.From the graph it can be seen that the progress in productivity depends largely on scientific and technological development.The more advanced the science and technology,the higher the productivity.

Whether from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age,or from the Iron Age to the Steam Age,or from the Motor Age to the Atomic,Computer and Space Age,the influence of science and technology on productivity is dramatically felt.In the early period of human history,productivity was very low.However,with the development of science and technology,productivity is getting greater and greater.Therefore,as it is put,productivity is based on science and technology.

From the above we can come to the conclusion that science and technology is the key to the development of greater productivity.Without it,we can hardly imagine how to improve productivity and how to better our lives.So we must keep in mind that science is power and lay stress on and devote major efforts to developing science and technology.

2.3.善于归纳,把图表中最有代表性的特征突出出来。所给出的图表一般分类列出各种数据,不善于归纳者往往是照图表叙述,罗列图表上的数据,不加任何分析,或作一些无意义的比较;而善于归纳者,则能找出数据的关键所在,舍弃那些不重要的,细小的东西,层次分明地对关键信息进行分析,从而得出合理的结论。请看下面一篇图表作文:

Which region can be considered as underdeveloped,why?

Studying the bar chart in Fig.4,we find that the Far East is the most underdeveloped region while North America is the most developed.

2.4.图表分析说明应简洁、清楚、通俗易懂。分析时要避免不必要的重复,指代要清楚,还要按照一定的逻辑顺序,一个问题一个问题地写,使读者有明确的概念,否则,颠倒了顺序,将会造成读者在理解上的混乱。

Ownership of Houses in a Big City in China

As can be seen from the chart, ownership of houses in a big city in China changed in the past ten years. In 1995, 75 percent of the houses were state owned. One possible version

According to the figures given by the graph, the Chinese farmers' personal income rose steadily from 1970 to 1990. In the middle of 1970's their income was rather low. Their annual personal income was about 180 yuan. But in 1980 the average personal income increased to 270 yuan. As is shown by the graph, in 1985 their income doubled up to 540 yuan. After that their income are growing sharply. In a word, during the period of 20 years the farmers' income had gone up rapidly.

There were many reasons for it. Mainly the Chinese government had been carrying out a reform and opening policy, which resulted in the steady growth of farmers' income.

Spend more time on physical activities

It is reported that American students spend more than 70 minutes on physical activities per day. However, in China students have only 12 minutes for physical activities per day.

Why do the Chinese students spend so little time on physical activities? From the pie chart above we can see, 40% of their spare time is spent doing their homework; 25% of it is spent watching TV; 20% is spent playing computer games or chatting online. Only 15% of their time is used to do some physical activities. It is obvious that most of their spare time is spent on homework, computer games and TV shows.

简介

图表作文是考研英语写作中较为常见的题型之一,也是难度较大的一种写作题型。这类作文可综合提供题目、数据、图像、提纲,形式多样,但实际上只涉及5个方面:描述图表、指明寓意、分析原因、联系实际、给出建议,而每次考试只是从这5个方面的内容中选出3个结合在一起。从写作类型来看,基本上属于说明文。要求考生围绕题目将有关信息转化为文字形式,考生应该具有一定数据分析和材料归纳的能力,同时会运用一定的写作方法。考研试题一般以三段式写作方法来组织文章,第一段总结归纳信息反映的整体情况,点出主题思想,第二段回答第一段所得出的问题,对数字、数据等做出有条理的分析比较,第三段做出总结或给以简单的评论。

特殊点

图表类写作题一向是中考书面表达中的难点。它不象看图叙事和提示作文那样直观明了,文体多以说明文和议论文为主。考查时要求同学们根据所给的图表、数据等进行分析、研究,阅读其中的文字和说明,弄清各种信息之间的关系,提炼要点,然后组织语言进行写作,必要时还要加入作者自己的观点。

和看图叙事不同的是,写图表作文时对图表和数据内容不必全部描述,只需重点引用能支持观点的一些数据。分析图表时切不可凭空想象,要善于抓住总的规律和趋势。时态方面除特定的时间用过去时外,常用一般现在时。

结构

图表作文的结构通常是三段式:

第一段分析图表中的数据变化反映出的问题或趋势,简要概述图表所揭示的信息;

第二段分析原因;

第三段提出解决问题的办法或建议。

要点:

写作图表作文时应该注意的几个方面:

1. 要对图表作简要的主题介绍。

2. 切忌不加详细分析、罗列数字。要进行横向、纵向的比较,寻找规律性的信息,通过计算找出部分与整体、部分与部分之间的关系,如增减的绝对数字、百分比、分数或倍数等。

3. 分析原因,寻找规律,把握主题。 4 根据分析所得信息得出结论。

(1)考生应仔细研究题目以及提示信息,认清图表中的数字、线条、阴影等部分的变化趋势和走向,抓住其主要特点,然后根据图表所显示的中心信息确定内容层次以及主题句。

(2)考生应该仔细研究图表所给出的大量信息,从中选取最重要,最有代表性的信息,然后根据全文的主旨去组织运用所获取的关键信息。切忌简单地罗列图表所给出的信息。

(3)图表作文一般采用的时态为一般现在时,但如果图表中给出了具体时间参照,考生则应对时态进行相应的调整。

(4)图表作文有一些固定句型和表达法,考生应对此融会贯通。

(5)图表作文可以细分为表格,曲线图、柱形图和饼形图。除了上述共同要点,考生还应了解这四种图在写作方面的不同特点。

—— 表格可以表示多种事物的相互关系,所以考生要对表格中所给出的大量数字进行比较分析,从中找出其变化规律。

—— 曲线图常表示事物的变化趋势,考生应认真观察坐标系所显示的数据信息,并且密切注意交汇在坐标横轴和纵轴上的数字及单位。

—— 柱形图用来表示各种事物的变化情况及相互关系,要求考生通过宽度相等的柱形的高度或长度差别来判断事物的动态发展趋势,因此考生应密切关注坐标线上的刻度单位及图表旁边的提示说明与文字。

—— 饼形图表示各事物在总体中所占的比例及相互关系,旨在要求考生准确理解并阐述一个被分割成大小不等切片的饼形图所传达的信息。考生应清

楚掌握部分与整体,部分与部分之间的相互关系,这种关系通常是以百分比的数字形式给出的。

(6)列出各段主题句。考生可以根据所给提纲或已知信息列出每段的主题句,为全文的展开做好铺垫。

写作详细指导

图表作文至少包含描述图表与解释原因两个部分,而当前的图表作文大多还有第三个段落。图表作文的规律性很强,不像图画式作文那样富于变化。

1.首段的写作

图表作文有表格(table)、柱形图(bar chart)、饼状图(pie chart)和折线图(diagram)之分,后三种都属于图表的范畴(chart)。不管是chart还是table,都需要进行描述,一般放在文章的第一部分,长度宜适中。描述数据我们要首先看看是几个变量(A),每个变量有几个数据(B),不妨以A*B表示。

如果只有一个变量,有三个数据,可以描述如下:

From the chart we can see clearly that the average number of hours a student spends on Internet per week has increased from less than two hours in 1998 to nearly four hours in 2000, and then to 20 hours in 2004.

如果是最常见的是2*3的情形,可以描述如下:

From the chart, we can see clearly that in a big city in China, stateowned houses

declined from 75% in 1990 to 60% in 1995 and then to 20% in 2000, while private houses rose from 25% to 40% and then to 80% during the same period.

这里用了while引起从句来突显对比,是一种非常好的办法,如果用两句话来描述,也完全可以。

如果是1*n(n>3)的情形,将头与尾描述出来即可,比较好的方法就是在句中描述最后一个与第一个相比变化了多少。

碰到多变量、每个变量多数据的情形,大家应首先进行分类,分成上升、下降两类,或者上升、下降、不变三类,这样问题就迎刃而解了。

2. 第二段的写作

第二段是解释原因的段落。我们谈谈两个问题。

首先是过渡句这个问题。这里不大可能放在第一段,因为第一段不可能像某些命题作文那样简洁(如只有一句)——例如提纲式作文中的批驳类文章中除第二段首句批驳之外还有首段末句批驳,效果很强烈。

其次就是此段的主题句(topic sentence)的问题。此句或主观或客观,并无拘束,只要上下文风格统一即可。

主观:We believe that three reasons can account for this phenomenon.

I believe that three reasons can account for this phenomenon.

In my mind, the reasons why the overseas students are on the rise are as follows.

主观之变体(使用插入语,突显主语):Three reasons, we believe, can account for this phenomenon.

Three reasons, I believe, can account for this phenomenon.

Three reasons, I firmly believe, can account for this phenomenon.

注意:插入语的使用属于看似平淡却极富功力的技巧,可以达到很好的效果。

主观之变体(使用插入语):Three reasons, in my mind, can account for this phenomenon. 客观:Several reasons can account for this phenomenon.

在主题句之后,可以使用连接词分两个、三个或四个方面来写,其中分三个方面来写最为常见。这里就与普通的说明文与议论文一样了——可以由最重要的到最不重要的,也可以由最不重要的到最重要的,也可能平行分布,依具体情况而定,不一而足。

3. 第三段的写作

第三段直接写结论的情况已基本没有了。如果这篇文章讲的是一个令人担忧的问题,那么这一段写解决办法的可能性最大。

如果这篇文章讲的是一个好的变化,那么这一段很可能是两种情况——可能写负面的影响或存在的问题,或者写未来趋势或发展方向。

上述均根据具体情况而定。

注意事项

写图表作文,并不是单纯的用语言文字把图表里的所有数字信息一一摊摆,逐条列出,而是利用这些数据,经常还得筛选,将该图表所要说明的主要问题阐述清楚。就这个意义上说,图表作文属于说明文。如果图表信息是用来论证某一观点,则图表作文属于议论文。因此,图表作文在结构处理和写法上与说明文或议论文是相同的。它通常必须

1. 用一个主题句或引言段,综述全图表的中心信息(也就是考生在审阅

图表后形成的结论)。

2. 列举三组左右的相关数据来说明或证实主题句或引言段所提及的要点。

分析产生这一图表结论的原因或联想推测可能引起的后果。
