A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number.A Chemical compound is a pure substance that is formed when atoms of two or more different elements combien and create a new material with properties completely unlike those of its constituent elements.They are both pure substances but elements consist of only one kind of atoms but compounds consist at least two different kinds.
元素是具有相同质子数的同一类原子的总称.化合物是两种或两种以上元素组成的纯净物.元素和化合物都是纯净物.但是元素是由同一种原子组成的而化合物是由至少两种不同原子组成的.

There are 7 horizontal rows,called periods and 18 columns,called groups,in the periodic table.In each period,the atomic number of each element is increasing.Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties.
