2.1.Materials
The titania pigments used in this study and their associated properties were all experimental grades prepared in the laboratories of Millenium Inorganic Chemicals,Grimsby,UK and are listed by alphabetical codes in Table 1.Experimental samples of titania prepared via the sulphate and chloride routes were milled for different periods of time in order to examine the influence of particle size on durability and spectroscopic properties as were various untreated and surface treated grades of pigments.The phenolic antioxidant,Irganox 1010 (pentaerythrityl tetrabis(3,5ditertbutyl4hydroxyphenyl)propan1oate) and hindered piperidine light stabiliser,Tinuvin 770 (bis(2,2,6,6tetramethylpiperidinyl sebacate) was obtained from Ciba Specialty Chemicals,Manchester,UK while the unstabilised polyethylene (in powder form) was supplied by a European manufacturer with a number average molar mass of 156,000.A metallocene catalyst was used in the production of this material.The polyethylene formulations were processed using a
Brabender Plasticorder (Duisburg,Germany) fitted with W50E chamber and cam blades @ 170 C for 7 min each and then compression moulded into film (100–200
mm thickness) for 1 min.
2.2.Paint formulations
The alkyd paint formulation used is based on an 18% PVC air drying long oil alkyd based on commercial Sobral P470 supplied by the Scott Bader Company Ltd.,Wellingborough,Northants,UK.The paint drier is a commercial Manosec CD33 supplied by Rhone Poulenc
Chemicals,Manchester,UK while the methyl ethyl ketoxime was supplied by Banner [Samuel] & Co.Ltd.,Liverpool,UK.The resin and white spirit are initially mixed and then dispersed at 2000 rpm using a Dispersmat AE3C with 50 mm diameter impellor for 30 min (until no striations are seen).The pigment is then added to the dispersion followed by the steatite balls in Melinex capped glass jars.The formulation is then roll milled overnight or planetary milled for 30 min.The mill base is then let down using the formulation shown and dipsersed for 10 min using the Dipsersmat and then roll milled for 15 min followed by leaving overnight to stabilise.The paint films (coated on stainless steel plates for accelerated weathering and aluminium plates for naturalexposures) were conditioned for 10 days at 40 C to remove any trapped solvent.
2.3.Ageing and weathering
The paint films were weathered using an Atlas Ci65 weatherometer and durability measured via mass loss and gloss loss.Gloss was measured using a BYK Micro Tri Glossmeter at 60 .Samples of polyethylene film were irradiated using a number of light sources.The first was a 254 nm low pressure mercury lamp (Applied Photophysics Ltd.,London) while the second was a Microscal Weathering Unit (Microscal Ltd.,London) utilising a 500 watt high pressure fluorescent mercury/ tungsten source (wavelengths >300 nm,ambient humditiy and temperature).Films were also oven aged in a hot air fan oven @ 90 and 110 C.
