Reflection is a powerful process to promote independent and self-directed learning,in which self-assessment is the best means for learners to reflect on their language learning.According to current theories of language learning,self-assessment is characteristic of the active,responsible learner,one who cultivates a sense of his/her progress,achievement,and perhaps level of competence.Self-assessment may figure as a sort of diary or record sheet in which the learner,at the end of a self-assess session,enters such details as the title of the exercise or activity undertaken,with a description of the task,the skill practiced,and evaluation.A self-access record sheet includes a column for the teacher’s comments,where a supervising teacher offers suggestions,encouragement,or criticism-for instance,“Try doing an exercise on listening to radio news”.From time to time the student writes a reply like “The news is spoken too fast.Is there anything slower?” Inevitably,this dialogue leads to an oral exchange:the teacher approaches the student to give help.Self-assessment leads to individual consultation.It is in need of new perspectives on progress,enabling students to monitor their progress and relate learning to individual needs.When given opportunity and encouragement,learners can clearly gain insights into their own learning such as their language abilities,learning styles,strengths,weaknesses and accomplishment etc.Whereas they can become detached and disengaged from their learning if they are not provided frequent opportunities to reflect on their work and discuss crafts of their learning.Through reflection,learners will have a better understanding and assessment of their knowledge and abilities and thus they can self-direct their language learning.They may set goals,make plans and try to realize them.This process goes toward independent,self-directed language learning.
Exercising initiative and responsibility,having a positive influential stake in decisions should lead to increased self-awareness and independence.When learners reflect on their accomplishment,evaluate their work,plan revision,set goal and develop positive self-perceptions of their language competence,they can take charge of their own learning.So reflection and self-assessment are important for AL.
