The effects of intrinsic motivations on the information technology usage habit
Abstract:Information technology habit has been researched in a few recent studies,but most studies on the determinants of information technology usage habit examine extrinsic motivators,leaving intrinsic motivators relatively unexplored.In contrast,researchers in the diverse fields of human-computer interaction,psychology and marketing have begun to note the importance of intrinsic motivations in understanding and predicting human behavior.Drawing upon insights from the habit/automaticity perspective,this paper attempts to incorporate the intrinsic motivators in the existing literature and propose a research schema for understanding the antecedents of individual information technology usage habits.The proposed model was empirically tested in the context of instant messenger and search engines usage.Results suggest that individual-satisfaction,perceived-enjoyment and frequency of past behavior positively influence the strength of a usage habit,and instant messenger users and search engine users treat satisfaction and perceived enjoyment differently.Instant messenger users are more sensitive to perceived enjoyment,and search engines users are more sensitive to satisfaction.These findings not only contribute to the important,yet relatively under-explored subject of IS usage habits,but also shed light on the linkage between users’ intrinsic motivators and information technology usage context that worthy further investigation.
