Thomas Hardy,an outstanding novelist and poet,had brought the literature world a glorious page.We commemorate him not only for his immortal masterpieces in the period of realism,but also for his excellent techniques in creating sympathetic protagonists vividly in a gloomy time.His most-known tragic novels include The Return of the Native (1878),The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886),Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891) and Jude the Obscure (1896) .This thesis deals with one of his novels,Jude the Obscure,analyzing the conflicting self and tragic,predetermined life of the hero,Jude.
This thesis consists of three major parts besides the introduction and conclusion.The first part is about Hardy’s tragic visions,which has a lot to do with his growing experiences.He weaves his sad feelings for the poor people in his writing,reflected on the ill-fated protagonists.The second part shows us the conflicting inner self of Jude Fawley,who suffers from fierce struggle between his natural desire and intellectual pursuits.And the third part will detailedly analyze Jude’s insurmountable tragic fate in intellectual pursuits,religious belief and marriage life.

作为一名杰出的小说家与诗人,托马斯·哈代为文学的世界增添了崭新而辉煌的一页.我们纪念他,不仅因为他有着许多不朽的现实主义著作,而且因为他有一种超人的写作能力,这使得他能够在当时黑暗的社会里树立起一些鲜明而感人的文学形象.他的代表作有《还乡》（1878）,《卡斯特桥市长》（1886）,《德伯家的苔丝》（1891）,《无名的裘德》（1896）等.本文将着重研究他的《无名的裘德》这部小说,并分析其中英雄形象裘德的内心的矛盾与注定是悲剧的一生.
本文除却引言与总结共有3个部分.第一部分讲的是哈代的悲剧意识,这种意识很大程度上取决于他的成长经历.他的作品中交织着他对穷人阶级的悲哀,这种悲哀常从文中主人公的身上映射出来.第二部分着重描述了裘德的常在野性与理性之间苦苦挣扎的内心世界.第三部分将着眼于裘德在智力修养、宗教信仰与婚姻上无法避免的悲剧命运.
