inflectional affixes have only particular grammatical meaning.they can only be affixed to words of the same word-class.the number of inflectional affixes is small and fixed,no new ones have been added since 1550.it also does not form a new word with new lexical meaning.but derivational affixes can derive a new word.they have not only independent lexical meaning but also affective meaning,besides they can be attached to words of different word-class.the number of derivational affixes is much larger than that of inflectional affixes and new ones are coined from time to time.
