In 1496,23 year-old Copernicus arrived in Italy and studied Law,Medicine and Theology at the Bologna and Padua Universities.Famous astronomer Domenico Maria Novara whom Copernicus met in Bologna University had a great influence on arousing his interest in astronomy,and Copernicus managed to learn the techniques of astronomical observation and Greek astronomy theory.He later received his doctorate in Canon Law at Ferrara University.

When Copernicus was about 40,he began the initial outline of his heliocentric theory by making a few manuscript copies available to his acquaintances.After many years of observations and calculations,he finally completed his great work,“De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium” (The Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies).In 1533,the 60 year-old Corpenicus delivered a series of lectures in Rome outlining his theory; Pope Clement VII heard the lectures but did not raise any objection.However,even after the work was in its definitive form,still Corpernicus dared not to publish it from fear of religious objections.He finally agreed to let “De Revolutionibus” go to press when he was nearing 70 years of age.
On 24th May 1543,the very day that he died,Copernicus had received the first printed copy of his work from Nuremberg; he could only place his hand on the cover and then died peacefully!

In his book,Copernicus accurately described the facts that the Earth rotated around its axis,the moon revolved around the Earth and the Earth and all other planets revolved about the Sun.But like other predecessors,he seriously underestimated the scale of the solar system.His assumption of all planets evolved as a series of concentric circles of course is a mistake.The mathematical operations in his theory were very complicated and erroneous.However,the publication of his work had attracted great interests and propelled some other astronomers to conduct more accurate observations on the planetary motions.
