At the age of 10,Mr.Sanders began working on a farm for two dollars a month. His difficult childhood caused him to work in many places. He was a streetcar conductor in Indiana at 15 and a soldier in the Cuban-American War when he was 16.
After the war Harland worked as a railroad fireman. Then he studied law by correspondence, which allowed him to get a job as a justice of the peace (治安官员).He then worked on a steamboat, sold automobile tires(汽车轮胎),and later became a gas station operator. He was then 40 years old.Since he liked to cook,he began serving his gas customers chicken at his own dining room table.
