In the present treatment,just one experimental value is
needed to evaluate the oxide ion polarizability aO2\3 and
optical basicity L,that is,the energy gap Eg or refractive
index n.There is no model so far involving optical
electronegativity Dw\2glass as a parameter in obtaining the
optical basicity L and electronic polarizability aO2\3 values
of binary oxide glasses.We find Eqs.(4) and (5) suitable for
the estimation of the optical basicity L and electronic
polarizability aO2\3 .The simplicity of the present study is to
estimate the optical basicity L and electronic polarizability
aO2\3 values for different binary oxide glasses,just one
experimental value is needed,that is,the optical electronegativity
values Dw\2glass.The estimated optical basicity L
and electronic polarizability aO2\3 of binary oxide glasses
based on Dw\2n are presented in Table 1 (columns 11 and 13).
For comparisons,the values of Dimitrov and Komatsu [10]
are also included in the same table (columns 10 and 12)
The calculated values of electronic polarizability aO2\3 and
optical basicity L are plotted against the experimental
values in Figs.3 and 4,respectively.A good agreement can
be observed between the electronic polarizability aO2\3 and
optical basicity L values obtained with different initial
quantities.
Our estimated oxide ion polarizability aO2\3 and optical
basicity L values using the optical electronegativity Dw\2glass
(Eqs.(4) and (5)) deviate slightly from the values of
Dimitrov and Komatsu [10] in the case of PbO\3P2O5,
PbO\3B2O3,and PbO–SiO2.For RnOm\3TiO2 (R ¼ K2O,
Rb2O,and PbO) compositions,the estimated oxide ion
polarizability aO2\3 and optical basicity L values using
Eqs.(4) and (5) at higher first oxide percentage deviate
more in comparison with the values of Dimitrov and
Komatsu [10].A fair agreement has been observed between
these values in the rest of the composition.This means that
the determination of oxide ion polarizability aO2\3 and
optical basicity L by means of optical electronegativity
Dw\2glass may also be used as an alternate approach.
