Metformin hydrochloride is a biguanide oral hypoglycaemic agent used for non-insulin dependent(type 2) diabetes mellitus where diet alone has failed.It may be used both as primary or adjunctive therapy,either alone or in combination with insulin or sulphonylureas.
Dosage & administration
Metformin is given by mouth,in an initial dosage of 500 mg three times daily or 850mg
Twice daily and should be taken with meals.This may be gradually increased if necessary to a maximum of 3g daily in divided doses.control may take up to two weeks to establish,and once achieved,can be reduced to a maintenance level.
