At this point the waiter brought my chicken, and I am embarrassed to report that it smelled just like the partridge. It was uneatable. I tried cutting off a small piece, but blood ran out the end and the smell increased. I followed through and tasted it, but it was truly awful and I must have made a face, for the Englishman reached over, cut himself a helping, cut it into two and tried one while giving the other to his wife. Neither could eat the sample, whereupon the Englishman smiled and said very softly, “See what I mean?”
