It is difficult to translate Chinese liquor since this class of alcoholic drinks has no specific representation of name - like Russian vodka, Scottish whiskey, Canadian rye etc.
I do not like to use the more common translation 'Chinese wine' because the proof of Chinese liquor is too high to be called wine! In another word, using wine for Chinese liquor lower the class of our liquor.
The only well known word to describe Chinese liquor is Maotai, but it is a brand, not a class name.
Even in Chinese language, we do not have a specific name for the high proof liquor except 白酒. We also cannot use the word 'jiu' because it is only a general term for alcohol.
I suggest to use the word 'bai-jiu' as a class name just like rum, tequila, whisky or vodka.
One fifth of the world's population is Chinese, if we insist to call it bai-jiu, then other people will follow.
