清代康熙皇帝，在每年春节都要亲笔御书大『福』字，赏赐给有功的王公大臣，以表示天子对臣下的恩宠。而王公大臣如能得到『福』字，会喜出望外，受宠若惊，感到皇帝对自己的信任，预示着官运亨通、飞黄腾达。

康熙一生酷爱书法，书法极佳，但很少题字，所以就有了『康熙一字值千金』的说法。康熙帝在御笔书『福』时特别隆重。这一天，要在乾清宫升座，由康熙帝挥毫开笔。

恭王府中的『福』字为康熙御笔之宝，隐于秘云洞中，谓之『洞天福地』，纵观这个『福』，刚劲有力，颇具气势。福字碑如何被和|得到并藏于秘云洞中，仍然是个谜。
