A couple of weeks ago a philosophy professor at Fudan University got a big surprise when he walked into his classroom—many students were not there!He looked around and many seats were empty.Where had his students gone?Had they come down with a strange virus?Had they been captured by aliens and taken into space?
　　Well,it turns out that it was nothing so dramatic.The missing students had been “told” to skip class and help out with a visit to the school by a big Hong Kong movie star,Tony Leung,the star of such movies as In the Mood for Love (《花样年华》) and Lust,Caution (《色·戒》).Leung was there to talk about “dreams and the movies” and he’d attracted such a big crowd that the professor’s students (they were armed police trainees) were needed for crowd control.
　　When the Fudan professor heard this,he was not happy.He was unhappy because no one had had the courtesy to ask his permission to skip the class,and he was unhappy that a prestigious university like Fudan had asked a “movie star” to talk to the students.
　　On the first part,the professor had a right to be angry.It was disrespectful of the organizers to shanghai his students and not tell him about it.On the second part,he may have been a little unrealistic.The modern university is not an ivory tower separated from the culture that surrounds it,and that includes pop culture.And today’s students should not be expected to be constantly buried in their books like monks in a monastery.
　　Perhaps the next time Tony Leung comes for a visit,he should attend the professor’s class for a nice philosophical discussion about these things.
