Changes in People’s Diet
As can be seen from the table, the past five years has witnessed dramatic changes in people’s diet. Grain, as the staple food of most Chinese, is now playing a less important role in their diet, while the consumption of high quality food such as meat, milk and fruit has greatly
There are two factors leading to the change. For one thing, people now enjoy a higher standard of living. In the old days few families could afford meat and milk every day, which often meant a big chunk of the family income. But now people have enough money to taste a rich verity of foods. For another, people of today attach more attention to nutrition. They are not merely content to fill the stomach. They are seeking the most reasonable diet which will do good to their health.
In a word, with people’s standard of living getting higher and higher, changes in their diet will be more obvious and greater.
Topic: Student Use of Computers (at least 150 words)
1、 上图所示为1990、1995、2000年某校大学生使用计算机的情况,请描述其变化;
2、请说明发生这些变化的原因(可从计算机的用途、价格或社会发展等方面加以说明);
, the average number of hours a student in a certain university spends on the computer per week increased dramatically over the period from 1990 to 2000. In 1990, it was less than two hours while in 1995, it hit / reach four hours. And in 2000, the number (飞速上升) nearly twenty hours, which is over ten times than that of 1990.
Obviously computers are becoming increasingly popular for males and for females.
A multitude of factors could account for the rise. In the first place, computers facilitate us in more aspects of life. Also, the rapid development of the internet enlarges our demands for using computers. We can easily contact friends in remote places through the internet. In the second place, the prices of computers are getting lower and lower, which enable more students to purchase them.
However, there still exist some problems, such as, poor quality, out-of-date designs and so on. And how to balance the time between using computers and studying is also a serious problem. Anyhow, we will benefit a lot from computers as long as we use them properly.

The mouse is a most effective device used by people to communicate with a computer.
The mouse is a most effective device used by people to communicate with a computer.
For most people, it‘s almost impossible to operate a computer without a mouse, let alone surf
the Internet. A well-chosen mouse is really handy, flexible and convenient in controlling the screen. With the functions of inserting, deleting, moving and copying, it enables us to edit test, browse web page and download what we want. It can even bring us a flood of music, movies and PC games. Just imagine, all this can be done with a cute mouse.
A convenient tool can certainly make our work easier, but it doesn‘t always help in a positive
way. Too much ready information on our fingertips leaves little room for knowledge pursuing. Too many ready answers make us less excited in finding truth. Relying too much on mouse clicking makes us lazier and less creative both mentally and physically.(153 words)
Passage 1
Sample 1:Thomas Edison
Born in America, Thomas Edison was a great scientist and inventor. He was once thought to
be a boy who was not worth educating. In fact, he was a man full of imagination.
I admire Edison a lot because of his great contribution to the world. He had more than 1,000
inventions. In his lifetime, he was always eager to know how things worked, which helped him to earn the nickname“the Wizard of Melo Park”.He was also so diligent that he worked day and night. And this explained why he had so many great inventions.
What impresses me most is his famous saying,“Genius is one percent inspiration and
ninety-nine percent perspiration.”Probably I cannot be an Edison myself, but I can be a hard-working learner. From him, I realize the secret to success is not when or where you were born, but what you are doing and how you do it in your life.
Sample 2:Helen Keller
Every time I read“...if I had the power of sight for three days”,I cannot help being moved by
its author Helen Keller, an ordinary but great American woman.
I admire Helen because she is optimistic about life. She became deaf and blind when she was
19 months old. Since then she lived in a world of darkness and silence, and communication seemed only a dream for her. But she never gave up and struggled to lead an active life. Under the guidance of her teacher, Ms. Sullivan, Helen learned to read and write and became a famous writer. For a disabled person like her, this was really a wonder!
Helen has set an excellent example to all of us. Her story tells us that we should value what
we have, and try our best to overcome any difficulty in life.
Sample 3:William Shakespeare
Do you know Hamlet? Have you read The Merchant of Venice? These two great works are
both written by William Shakespeare, my favorite English writer and the man of all ages!
Shakespeare, a son from a poor family, a man of little education, wrote plays and poems that
are read all over the world. I like him because his comedies and tragedies bring me into a fantastic world; I love him because his poems let me enjoy the beauty of the English language; I admire him because his keen sights set me thinking and teach me how to lead a meaningful life!
Since“Life is a stage”,we are actually all actors and actresses. On this stage, everyone has his
own role to play, and I will try my best to play my role well.

Reading Interests of Senior Middle School Students
Recently a survey has been done to find out the reading interests of senior middle school students. In this survey, one thousand senior middle school students from ten schools in Hubei Province were interviewed. They were asked which they liked reading most among the four categories of English articles: news, stories, popular science articles and articles about learning methods.
The survey shows that more than half of the students like to read news most. Twenty-six percent of the students say that English stories are their favorite. Only seven percent of the students are most interested in reading articles about learning methods. However, the number of students who enjoy reading popular science articles doubles that of those who prefer reading articles about learning methods.

Directions:
Write an essay of 160~200 words based on the following bar chart. In your essay, you should
1) first describe the bar chart,
2) then interpret its meaning, and
3) give your comment on it.

(196 words)
As is apparently portrayed in the bar chart above, at present university students suffer from psychological problems of various kinds, among which spiritual depression, miscellaneous
problems, and suicide-committing top the list. What the chart reveals is indeed thought-provoking.
The implied meaning of the chart above can be briefly stated as follows. On the one hand, university students are encountering more psychological problems than ever before. Most university students are overloaded with study and haunted by employment pressure. As young and inexperienced people, they are also facing emotional dilemma and trial of human interrelationship. Besides, some students are in a financial predicament. Effective countermeasures must be taken to reverse the current grim situation. In sum, the psychological problems should be put on our agenda.
In my view, great efforts must be made so as to ensure the healthy growth of university students. To begin with, we must have a good understanding the necessity of psychological instruction and guidance among university students. What’s more, government departments at different levels and related organizations should make joint efforts to create a more relaxing environment for university students. Only in this way can university students develop well both physically and psychologically.

1. describe briefly the changes in life expectancy and infant mortality,

You should write neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.(20 points)
The two bar charts reveal that developing countries have made noticeable strides in the health conditions between 1960 and 2005. In 1960, the average life expectancy in these countries was at the age of 40. However, in 2005 this figure soared to almost 60. At the same time, infant mortality fell considerably in these countries, from roughly 200 deaths for every 1,000 births to around 100.
A majority of reasons account for this change, but the followings are the most critical ones. First of all, the economies of those countries have developed rapidly in recent decades, and consequently there is more money available for people to spend on health care. Another factor is that the governments of developing countries are paying more attention to education public health. The third reason, which cannot be neglected, is that people are playing growing emphasis to life quality, which is responsible for this desirable tendency.
The figures shown above indicate a remarkable progress in the health conditions of developing countries, which have witnessed both rising living standard and life span in past decade. If this trend continues, developing countries will soon approach and exceed the developed countries in terms of health care.
