恐龙最早出现在约2亿4千万年前的三叠纪，灭亡于约6500万年前的白垩纪所发生的中生代末白垩纪生物大灭绝事件。恐龙最终灭绝于6300万年前的新生代第三纪古新世。“恐龙”名称的由来：

实际上，人类发现恐龙化石的历史由来已久。早在发现禽龙之前，欧洲人就已经知道地下埋藏有许多奇形怪状的巨大骨骼化石。直到发现了禽龙并与鬣蜥进行了对比，科学界才初步确定这是一群类似于蜥蜴的早已灭绝的爬行动物。

1842年，英国古生物学家理查德-欧文爵士（1804-1892）用拉丁文给它们创造了一个名称，这个拉丁文由两个词根组成，前面的词根意思就是“恐怖的”，后面的词根意思是“蜥蜴”。恐龙复原图从此，“恐怖的蜥蜴”就成了一类爬行动物的统称。

我们中国人则既有想象力又有概括力，把这个拉丁名翻译成了“恐龙”。恐龙根本就不是蜥蜴。
