One day a farmer‘s donkey fell into an unwanted well. The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to find out what to do.

What: Silent Dinner Parties (SDPs) were dreamed up by artist Honi Ryan as a student in Germany in 2007. The SDP is a normal dinner party, with one huge exception: Guests are asked not to use their voices, not to read or write, to try to make as little noise as possible, and to keep doing that for at least two hours. Ryan says, “It changes all the rules that we have in social situations.”

Where: Ryan has held more than a dozen SDPs in Germany, China and Australia, all but one in private homes, some as arts festival events. “Everyone keeps silent. When we communicate, there’s lots of eye contact, hand gestures and walking around acting things out. We’ve had silent bands and people making little tableaux (造型) out of each other. It’s a really great experience.”

Alma, our lovely dog, isn’t with us any more. She

died several years ago. But while sharing our home, she

brought such joy and love that we still miss her.

We have two apple trees in our backyard. Alma loved

1 He came from a rocky farm in Italy, somewhere south of Rome. How or when he got to America, I don't know. But one evening I found him standing in the driveway, behind my garage. He was about five-foot-seven or eight, and thin.

," he said. It was hard to comprehend his broken English.

6 "A man got the lawn mower out of the garage and worked on the yard," she answered. "I assumed you had hired him."

8 The next two days were busy, and I forgot about Tony. We were trying to rebuild our business and bring some of our workers back to the plants. But on Friday, returning home a little early, I saw Tony again, behind the garage. I complimented him on the work he had done.

10 I managed to work out some kind of small weekly pay, and each day Tony cleaned up the yard and took care of any little tasks. My wife said he was very helpful whenever there were any heavy objects to lift or things to fix.
