thinning to -6 pm is required and thus is routinely done
for InSb arrays); (v) the top QWIP ohmic contact can
now be metalized; and (vi) the microlens array can now be
attached (either epoxy or air gap).An important advantage
of this isolated pixel approach is that virtually all the
light is trapped inside the individual QWIPs (as indicated
in Fig.150) simultaneously increasing the quantum efficiency
and reducing the crosstalk to negligible values.A
highly advantageouas dditional benefit is that the thermalexpansion
mismatch problem between the Si substrate and
the GaAs QWIP is completely eliminated and thus arbitrarily
large two-dimensional arrays can be fabricated.In
the future,the possibility for monolithic integration with
GaAs electronics provides another approach to eliminate
thermal mismatch problems
