Some recent comedies seemed to have been searching,reaching,desperately grasping for something funny to print; "Meet the Parents" has the opposite problem.Funny bits abound -- there's barely room for them all.In fact,overstuffed to the point of tearing at the seams,the film might have benefited from a bit more cutting.
Stiller is the Romeo in love with Pam.The couple must fly to her parents' home for the wedding of her sister.Stiller's objective is to "Meet the Parents" and win them over in order to acquire their consent to marry Pam.Ah,but pops De Niro is no push over.Pam warns,"Don't waste humor on my parents."
In addition to abstaining from sex and cigarettes for three days,Stiller must field the suspicious De Niro who runs his household like a CIA agent or something of that ilk.The Poster shows the two sitting at a lie detector machine with Stiller in the hot seat.(Actually,at first glance I'd thunk wrongly that that was some kind of shock therapy.) Anyway,Stiller's stress factor increases geometrically as every good intentioned offering gets twisted on its ear.
It's a very funny film (the first meeting sequence is absolutely wonderful),you'll have good hardy laughs,but the third act is a little messy.

鈥楳eet the Parents鈥 is one of an increasingly tiresome line of Robert De Niro movies in which he attempts to parody his own image as one of Hollywood鈥檚 hard men.It鈥檚 also yet another example of Ben Stiller playing basically the same character as he does in half a dozen other films 鈥 a guy who bungles his way through life and permanently feels awkward,but who鈥檚 also cripplingly warm-hearted and eager to please.But,more significantly than any of that,it鈥檚 one of the occasions where both of those instantly-recognisable characters work incredibly well.
Stiller plays the unfortunately-named Greg Focker,a male nurse who鈥檚 head-over-heels in love with girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo).He鈥檚 decided it鈥檚 time to pop the question,but thinks it might be a nice idea to ask her dad鈥檚 permission first 鈥 so,as the title suggests,off the pair of them go to 鈥渕eet the parents鈥?
Of course,what should be a perfectly pleasant weekend at her folk鈥檚 house soon turns into an out-and-out nightmare.Daddykins (De Niro) takes an instant dislike to our Greg and,being an ex-CIA man-in-black,is determined to use everything at his disposal (including some particularly intimidating polygraph equipment) to interfere,dig for dirt,and generally make his house-guest鈥檚 stay as uncomfortable as possible.
Based on a short film written way back in 1992 by Greg Glienna and Mary Ruth Clarke,鈥楳eet the Parents鈥 has to go down as one of the best comedies of 2000.Although not possessing a great range of comic dialogue,it generates laughs through Greg鈥檚 increasing feelings of embarrassment and exasperation 鈥 and,though the premise may at first feel like it鈥檚 going to be a one-trick pony,there鈥檚 enough going on to keep the standard consistently high.

Robert DeNiro and "ha-ha" don't seem to go together.Maybe it's the indelible gallery of mad dogs that the Oscar-winning actor,57,has played for director Martin Scorsese in films from Raging Bull to Cape Fear.Even in The King of Comedy,he went psycho.But the fact is that De Niro started his film career being roguishly funny in Brian DePalma's Greetings and Hi Mom.He showed a deft comic touch in the otherwise laborious 1971 farce The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight (go rent them and see).And certainly De Niro's most distinguished recent work hasn't been in turgid dramas like Flawless,The Fan and Frankenstein,but in comedies that let him show his gift for ham (Analyze This) and wry (Wag the Dog).
All of which brings us to Meet the Parents,a hilarious hodgepodge of The In-Laws and Annie Hall,in which De Niro gives his best comic performance to date.Director Jay Roach,who guided both Austin Powers flicks,casts De Niro as retired horticulturalist Jack Byrnes,the very model of suburban WASP respectability with a Colonial house on posh Long Island,a devoted,dithering wife,Dina (Blythe Danner),and two gorgeous daughters,Pam (Teri Polo) and Debbie (Nicole DeHuff).The serviceable script by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg hangs on the premise that Pam,now a teacher in Chicago,is coming home to attend Debbie's wedding,and she's bringing along her new boyfriend to meet the parents.Here's the thing:Dad is really a CIA operative,and the boyfriend is male nurse Greg Focker,played by a never-funnier Ben Stiller as an urban neurotic who feels as lost as Woody Allen in Annie Hall when Diane Keaton tells him sweetly,"You're what Grammy Hall would call a real Jew."
Among the supporting cast,Owen Wilson is a merry standout as Kevin,Pam's rich ex-fiance -- it doesn't comfort Greg when Pam says she and Kevin were "just a silly sex thing." But the movie,which wobbles along amiably in a hit-and-miss way,comes down to a goofball duel of wits,and De Niro and Stiller play the crazy comic hell out of it.It's impossible not to laugh when Jack hooks up Greg to a home lie-detector ("Have you ever purchased pornographic material?"),keeps o share a toilet with Mr.Jinx,the Himalayan feline that Jack dotes on with a purring affection that De Niro makes sidesplitting and a little scary."Don't you touch that cat,you son of a bitch," shouts Jack when he thinks,for reasons I'll leave the film to explain,that Greg intends to milk Mr.Jinx.Days after you see Meet the Parents,you'll think about De Niro -- even if it's just the way he sizes up Stiller and calls him "Focker" -- and smile.

A very funny movie that is able to combine a great premise with ideal actors,laugh out scenes with a sentimental touch and over the top sequences with a believable story line.Go see this movie and laugh!See it with your parents and join in the fun.See it with your better half and remark on the similarities.See it with your brother,your sister,you cat for God's sakes,most "people" should be able to identify and appreciate this film.And even though I love toilet humor as much as the next guy,I have to admit that it was nice to see a movie that despite some "easy" dirty jokes (one excellent running gag was the use of the Stiller character's last name during the entire feature,spelled f-o-c-k-e-r),relied mostly on sight gags,physical comedy and finely tuned humorous moments.Really well-made.And kudos to director Jay Roach who came off his one-two punch of the AUSTIN POWERS movies with a solid underrated uppercut a la MYSTERY,ALASKA (8/10) and TKO'd it all with this.
And DeNiro,boy-oh-boy,what can be said about Robert DeNiro?Is there anything that this man can't do?Another one out of the ballpark for the man best known for his dedication to the craft of acting,with one more extremely effective comedic performance.Wow.Now let's see Pacino take a few shots at the game of funny!Woo-haa,indeed!But I can't top off this review without mentioning the great work done here by the incomparable Ben Stiller.I love this guy!I love his whole persona,his nervous twitches,his way of being sincere,funny and serious all at the same time.I really do believe that he is one of the more underrated comedic actors of our time and I sincerely hope that he gets more recognition after this.The rest of the performers were also very well cast,notably Blythe Danner as the aloof mother and Owen Wilson,set perfectly as the stinkin' rich ex-fianc茅.Gotta love that crooked nose of his.I enjoyed this entire movie from start to finish.It's funny when it has to be,hilarious when it needs to be and even touching as it nears conclusion.Many memorable lines,many funny moments with the cat (cat haters beware!) and an overall good time.Don't go in expecting the world to bowl you over with this but do expect to be thoroughly entertained.Thumbs way up,folks!
