Children's Day is celebrated in many parts of the world. It is a day to highlight the dignity of children and their need for love, care, and respect, and instill in the children a sense of independence and national pride. It is also a day to honor adults that have contributed to improving the lives of children.
In August 1925, some 54 representatives from different countries gathered together in Geneva, Switzerland to convene the first "World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children", during which the "Geneva Declaration Protecting Children" was passed. The proclamation made a strong appeal for the spiritual needs of children, relief for children in poverty, prevention of child labor, reassessing the way that children are educated and other issues related to the welfare of children around the world.
After the conference, various governments around the world designated a day, different in each country, as Children's Day, to encourage and bring joy to children as well as to draw the attention of society to children's issues.
Universal Children's Day is on November 20. First proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children.
Many countries like China chose to celebrate the International Children's Day on June 1, which has been established in November 1949 at the International Democratic Women's League Council held in Moscow. The Day, which is also called the First of June, is explained as "an international memorial day that exists upon the purpose of securing lives and rights of children and encouraging their happiness and health".
However, Women's/Children's Day (formerly Children's Day) is celebrated in Taiwan on April 4. This day marks the restoration of Taiwan to Chinese rule in 1945 after half a century of Japanese occupation.
May 5 is Children's Day in Japan. It became a national holiday in 1948, but it has been a day of celebration in Japan since ancient times. It was traditionally a festival for boys. Girls have their own festival, held on March 3.
In India, the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru is celebrated as Children's Day every year, on November 14.
April 23 is the "National Sovereignty and Children's Day" in Turkey. It was Mustafa Kemal Aataturk, the Father of the Republic of Turkey who loved children so much, that started the Day, the same date when the Republic of Turkey was founded. On the Day, certain children are selected to take over the places of the government and even a lucky kid is the president of Turkey for a whole day!

Children's Day is an event celebrated on various days in many places around the world. International Children's Day is celebrated on June 1 and Universal Children's Day is on November 20. Other countries celebrate a local 'children's day' on other dates. The holiday is simply set to honor children and minors.
The International Children's Day had its origin in Turkey in 1920 (April 23, 1920) and later in the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the International Children's Day: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.
Children's Day was first celebrated worldwide in October 1955, under the sponsorship of International Union for Child Welfare in Geneva. The idea of a Universal Children's Day was mooted by Rubab Mansoor grade 8 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954. Moazzem and Abass helped and contributed a lot in this.
Universal Children's Day takes place on November 20 annually. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children. It was also chosen as the day to celebrate childhood. Universal Children's Day is proceded by International Men's Day on November 19 creating a 48 hour celebration of men and children respectlively during which the positive roles men play in children's lives are recognized.
November 20 is also the anniversary of the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. The Convention on the Rights of the Child was then signed on the same day in 1989, which has since been ratified by 191 states.
Children's Day is celebrated on 1 June each year. It is usually marked with speeches on children's rights and wellbeing, children TV programs, parties, various actions involving or dedicated to children, families going out etc.
People's Republic of China
In the People's Republic of China, Children's Day is celebrated on June 1 and is formally known as "the June 1 International Children's Day" (Simplified Chinese: 六一国际儿童节; pinyin: lìu yī guó jì ér tóng jié). When the People's Republic of China was first established in 1949, the State Council (Cabinet) designated a half-day holiday for all primary schools on June 1. This was later made into a full day's break in 1956 with The Announcement by the State Council to make June 1 Children's Day a One-Day Holiday. Schools usually hold activities such as camping trips or free movies on Children's Day to allow students to have fun, and children of civil servants might also receive small gifts from the government. Entrance ceremonies of the Young Pioneers of China (similar to boy scouts in the West) are usually held on June 1 as well. However on June 1, 2008 the day was made even more memorable, as many people remembered the children who died in the earthquake just a few weeks before.
