In general,, one can see that the hands would form a right angle twice per hour (at quarter to and quarter past the hour), and then with 24 hours/day = 48. But not so fast. There's an oddity in there. Between 2:00 and 3:00 and then again between 3:00 and 4:00, only 1 right angle is formed. (draw it out for yourself to see this - makes for a nice holiday brain teaser for the neices and nephews). So you have to subtract 4 from the count (to cover both am and pm) to get 44.
