how不能,但what完全可以啊.
1 What was impossible 50 years ago may be quite possible today (这是what引导的定语从句)
== Something that was impossible 50 years ago may be quite possible today.（定语从句）
2 How she managed to finish her hard work on time is beyond my ken.（主语从句）
== The way that / in which she finished her hard work is beyond my ken.（定语从句）
3 She told them what she had seen there （定语从句）
== She told them all / everything that she had seen there.（定语从句）
4 They are building a second library in what was once the school cinema..（定语从句）
== They are building a second library in the house that / which was once the school cinema...（定语从句）
比如 I like the man who has got the first prize.定语从句的引导词是为了引导一个形容主语或宾语的句式，who which 可以代替被形容的主语或宾语，what与how不具备这种功能，不适用于这种语境。
它们的意思是什么啊之类的，在汉语里也木有“什么+形容词”这种搭配吧，大概这么记，反正能引导的就那几个，which啊什么的，多背几个句子有语感就差不多了，其实我也说不清= =
简单地说 定语从句中的先行词 在主句中作宾语 在从句中作主语或宾语 what= the thing that. 符合这个 所以what可以 how不行
