这人躺着的月桂树丛,所在的公路拐角以南,是一个陡峭的向上的斜坡, 指向西边儿, 这条坡儿大概有100码. 过了这100码,Z字型的小坡儿又向南,伸向了森林;第二个拐角那儿是块扁平的大岩石,向北突出,俯瞰着公路起始处的峡谷。岩石伫立在一个悬崖上,岩石上的小石块掉下来,会落在垂直1000英尺以下的树上。而那个兵睡着的地方,就在这悬崖下的另一个小角落。他要是醒了看到那崎岖的公路,突出的岩石,和其下面的陡峭悬崖,定会吓晕的。
这个国家里,除了这样的峡谷深处的低洼草地有小树林,还有很多的小树丛。溪水从峡谷深处轻快的流过。这块地看起来比庭院大些,但是方圆其实还要宽阔几倍。绿绿的,好似森林。在它不远处,有一排大石崖,与我们刚才假定的那个视角所看到的景象一样。公路盘旋着悬崖,延伸向上。从我们这个视角来看,峡谷的构造就好像真像切入似的,不禁会纳闷儿:公路怎么能够在那个地方延伸向上呢?那些在1000英尺下的草地上,流淌着的小溪,又是从何处来,到何处去呢?
