应去掉其中的had.因为:had died 为过去完成时,而过去完成时是一种相对时态,即它总是相对过去某一时间来说,它在这一过去时间之前,也就是我们通常所说的“过去的过去”.而此句中没有过去时间作为参照,表示 die 这个动作在这个过去时间之前,所以不宜用过去完成时.另一方面,由于句中有过 in 1980 这样的过去时间状语,故用一般过去时即可.比较下面这个句子:
His father had died when he returned home in 1980.当他1980年返回家乡时,他的父亲已经过世了.
这里用过去完成时,是因为 had died 在 in 1980 这一过去时间之前.

has/had been dead
die是短暂性动词,不能用于完成时。

把had去掉,因为后面已经有了in 1980,就意味着这句话是过去时,所以直接用died就好了,加had是多此一举。
