TOPIC:ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws:just and unjust.Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and,even more importantly,to disobey and resist unjust laws."
The speaker's assertion actually involves two claims:As a responsible individual in society,one should obey just laws; more importantly,we should also disobey and resist unjust laws.As far as I am concern,I totally agree with the first claim although there is ambiguous definition of the word "just".While I fundamentally disagree with the second claim for it may exert potential negative impact on our society unless the law is unjust to some extent that go against the benefits of all people.
The threshold problem of this issue which makes it hard to determine is that according to different individuals or groups,the law always aims to protect the interests of the majority.In other words,this means the law is no doubt opposite to the minority whose views are contrary to the mainstream.For example,the law of environment limits many factories' development by imposing various confinements of their emissions which should reach to the minimum standard while doing this course of actions definitely increase the factories' costs.To the manufactures,this law is unjust,for they have to update their equipment to observe the new standard while to the most citizens who live nearby,this regulations brings a lot of advantages to them by reducing potential environmental threats.Therefore,a controversial problem has come into limelight-whether certain kind of law is reasonable may vary from individual to individual for they hold different interests.
Although the law system may be far from perfect,especially in the developing country,we still need to obey it in the civilized society most of the time whether for individual's benefits or for that of society as a whole.For an individual,it is a citizen's obligation and responsibility to obey law.Only do this,can we be saved when offended under the protection of law.The obligation and benefits are mutual.Even under the circumstance that a citizen's benefit is infringed,he or she can reflect this problem to relevant department to solve it rather than disobey and resist unjust laws for this will do nothing but reduce you to disadvantaged position.For a society,the stability which relies mainly on every citizen's obeying law is the fundamental of its development and prosperity.If anyone resist or disobey law leading to crisis once meets problem,the society can hardly moves on when the basic social order is lost.
