The community Chinese in Tahiti
Contrary to what we would have been able to think at first sight,the history
of the community Chinese in French Polynesia did not begin with the
introduction in 1865 Chinese "coolies" "importedfor the occasion,following
the cotton adventure of one beginning Scot called William Stewart.
According to unconfirmed official sources,the first Chinese would have
arrived in Polynésie from 1830 during the big Chinese migrations at the same
moment westward (Singapore,Malaysia) and eastward (California,the Hawaiian
Islands,Peru).
Certain travelers would have stopped along the way on the islands of the
Pacific and would have based small colonies the official history of which did
not keep tracks
The coolies of Stewart would so have discovered to their big surprise that
there was already on the island of Tahiti,some restaurants and the vestiges

Stewart's cotton plantation,most of the coolies returned in China,following
