Poem Analysis
From Long Distance – Tony Harrison
Theme: Death, Nostalgia
“From Long Distance” is written by Tony Harrison, whom is an English poet born in 1937. He is also a playwright. The poem has a fixed rhyme scheme, and every sentence has either 10 or 11 stresses. The poem is about the narrator’s parents passing away. At first, the narrator could not understand why his father can’t let go of his mother’s death, however, when his father also passed away, he is echoing his father’s actions.
In the first stanza, the narrator tells the reader that his mother has passed away, and also tells the readers how his father deals with death. Readers can see that his father basically could not handle the death of narrator’s mother as he still “kept her slippers warming by the gas” and “put hot water bottles her side of the bed”. Moreover, his father also “still went to renew her transport pass”. The father still cannot accept the fact although his wife is already “two years dead” also shows how much he loves and needs her.
The narrator carries on explaining to the readers about how his dead cannot let go of the fact that his mum has died. Readers can see that the father actually knows that his wife is dead, but refuses to accept and believe it, because he actually has the awareness to “clear away her things”. “as though his still raw love were such a crime” also tells the readers that the narrator’s father is actually embarrassed of his own feelings, he is embarrassed that he couldn’t let go of his wife’s death. His “still raw love” to his wife is a “crime” to him now as he feels embarrassed.
In the third stanza, readers can see that besides all the hiding and pretends, the father still expects his wife to come back from the sentence “He knew she’d just popped out to get the tea”. There is a sense of sadness in here. Though the father knows his wife is dead, he still bears a slight hope that his wife will come back one day. He hopes “he’d hear her key scrape in the rusted lock and end his grief”. “Rusted lock” gives readers a feeling that the father has not gone out for a long time. It also somehow creates an atmosphere of oldness and nostalgia.
There is a change of tone in the fourth stanza, the narrator is no longer talking about how his father deals with his mother’s death. His father has also passed away. Although he understands very well that “life ends with death, and that is all”, he understands that his father has died, and would never come back again, but “just the same”, in narrator’s “new black leather phone book”, he included his father’s name. The narrator also still calls the “disconnected number” once owned by his father. The narrator is echoing his father’s actions, despite knowing that it is not right to do so.
The poem has a silent type of sadness. Although the poet did not use any death imageries or strong words representing sadness, the narrator’s father’s actions make readers sympathised of him. Tony Harrison successfully creates a sad atmosphere in his poem.
