Over 400 people attended an order-placing meeting in Beijing to promote the licensed products of the Beijing Olympic Games.
The Beijing Olympic Licensing Program is a major component of the Games’ marketing plan, with an aim to promote Olympic ideals and the Games’ brand image and provide an opportunity for the Chinese enterprises to participate in the program and for the general public to be involved in the Games.
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) launched the licensing program in November 2005 after a 15-month trial implementation. So far 59 enterprises have been signed up as producers plus 73 retail businesses. Up to 600 stores in major cities across the country sell the Olympic licensed products.
At the moment over 4,000 varieties of products are on the market. The order-placing meeting ahead of the traditional Chinese Spring Festival was seen helpful for both sellers and consumers.

Authorities in Chinese capital Beijing have ordered more than 8,000 busy public places in the city to use both Chinese and English for emergency broadcasts, a municipal work safety official said on Tuesday.
This is part of a new regulation on the safety of public places adopted by the Beijing municipal government.
In an emergency, crowded public places including shopping malls, restaurants, star-rated hotels, swimming pools, skiing grounds and other entertainment venues should broadcast in both languages over their entire premises, said Zhou Yuqiu, head of the municipal work safety bureau.
She said enterprises will be fined 5,000 to 20,000 yuan (640 to 2,561 U.S. dollars) or closed if they failed to offer the bilingual emergency broadcasts by April 1 when the regulation takes effect.
According to the regulation, 24-hour emergency lighting and exit signs are also now compulsory for the sites in question.
Entertainment venues must install closed-circuit TV and monitoring systems, according to the regulation.

Suddenly, some 500 university volunteers around the stage turned the scene into a sea of joy, where ten large banners depicting the wristlets' meanings paraded from the Bell Tower. In his speech, Qiang Wei, vice secretary of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and chief of the Volunteers' Work Coordination Group for the Beijing Olympic Games urged Beijing citizens to carry out the virtues of helping each other to lift the capital city's image as an advocate of civility and flash smiles to visitors and guests from around the world to attend the 29th Olympiad.
The ceremony was culminated in an art performance themed "Bring Smiles to the World" which was followed by Qiang Wei's strike of the 63-ton Bell to announce the beginning of the New Year.

Fengyun-2D, China's second geostationary orbit meteorological satellite, "has been in stable working conditions since the tests began on December 14," the China Meteorological Administration said.
The FY-2D, developed and manufactured by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology affiliated to China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp., can observe weather changes around the clock. The satellite, launched on December 8, 2006, is expected to provide better weather forecast services for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
China will launch another 22 meteorological satellites by 2020,including four more of the Fengyun-2 series, 12 of the Fengyun-3 series and six of Fengyun-4 series.

More than 6,200 volunteer drivers in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games will receive English language proficiency test from next weekend to the end of January.
The volunteers were picked from eight governmental departments including the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.
They were asked to use weekends to go to four driving training bases designated by the organizing committee for the Beijing Olympics to receive tests and evaluation about their English communication capability.
Students of English major with good academic records from the renowned Beijing Foreign Studies University will work as testing instructors.
A training scheme will be made based on the test results, according to Sunday's Beijing News.
The paper said the volunteers are "quite uneven" in English proficiency because of an age gap.

An exhibition themed "Olympics Anti-doping 40 years" was opened in Beijing Venture Plaza on Wednesday.
Sponsored by the Science and Technology Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and the Chinese Olympic Committee, the exhibition reviews a number of doping cases in the past years and provides video display of anti-doping test process as well as computer inter-action means for visitors to test their knowledge about the anti-doping combat.
Lin Wenyi, president of the Science and Technology Committee expected the exhibition to help popularize anti-doping efforts, spread the Olympic spirit and enhance public attention to the issue.
In his speech, BOCOG executive vice-president Yang Shu'an said in addition to intensifying anti-doping tests, educational strategies spearheaded by precautions need to be implemented to make athletes of the 2008 Olympic Games aware of the danger drugs can pose and create a social environment boycotting drug use.
To run until January 20, the exhibition is believed to be the first of its kind proposed by the host city to target a wider audience instead of a number of specialists in the history of the Olympic Games. Similar exhibitions are expected to be organized in 2007 and 2008 in various parts of China.
The International Olympic Committee has reportedly decided to increase anti-doping tests to 4,500 during the 2008 Olympic Games, up 25 percent from the 2004 Athens Games.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) has recently received the ISO14001 certificate, meaning that the environmental management system (EMS) set up by the BOCOG conforms to the ISO14001:1966 standards and requirements. The certificate issued by China's national environmental authentication center on October 13 covers areas including BOCOG's office work, the event route planning, venue planning, partners selecting, contracted hotels selecting, communication and environmental management. The BOCOG started establishing the EMS following BOCOG president Liu Qi's approval in April 2004. After experts' examination and appraisal of a trial practice of several months, the BOCOG passed the certification in September this year. The system will be implemented from now on to ensure BOCOG's scientific management of the Olympiad's preparation and hosting. As a theme of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Green Olympics means to prepare it in accordance with the principle of sustainable development, which calls for the protection of environment, conservation of resources and maintenance of ecological balance. The city's environmental infrastructure will be enhanced and its ecological surrounding improved. Beijing will widely organize environmental communication and education activities to raise public awareness and leave rich environmental legacy to China and world sports. BOCOG has compiled an EMS manual, assigned environmental management representatives, clarified responsibilities for BOCOG's different departments, held training courses, and confirmed some key environmental elements for all departments
