堪称梵高的化身的《向日葵》仅由绚丽的黄色色系组合.梵高认为黄色代表太阳的颜色,阳光又象征爱情,因此具有特殊意义.他以《向日葵》中的各种花姿来表达自我,有时甚至将自己比拟为向日葵.梵高写给弟弟西奥的信中多次谈到《向日葵》的系列作品,其中说明有十二株和十四株向日葵的两种构图.他以12来表示基督十二门徒,他还将南方画室（友人之家）的成员定为12人,加上本人和弟弟西奥两人,一共14人.
对于梵高而言,向日葵这种花是表现他思想的最佳题材.夏季短暂,向日葵的花期更是不长,梵高亦如向向日葵般结束自己短暂的一生,称他为向日葵画家,应该是恰如其分.
