Although the trend in management of solid waste has been
toward increased recycling, large quantities of waste are still
disposed of by landfilling. On the global scale landfilling
remains a major solution for final waste disposal. Management
of leachate and gas generated in the landfill still
remains a challenge for landfill operators. The ability to predict
future leachate production in a landfill is valuable both
when designing percolate collection and treatment systems
and estimating the costs of operating the landfill. As leachate
production is governed by the hydrological processes at
the landfill this means that an understanding of the hydrology
is important.
Due to the difficulty of locating suitable sites for landfills
and in order to be cost-effective modern controlled landfills
are normally designed to have an active life time of at least 25 years. Landfills are also very often divided into smaller
sub-sections of which only a few are active simultaneously.
This is done to avoid large open surfaces with waste and to
facilitate initiation of the waste stabilization processes inside
the sections. This means that an active landfill often will
consist of both closed sections complete with top cover and
open active sections that are still receiving waste. In some
cases the closed sections may even be planted with trees to
enhance evaporation of water. Therefore, the hydrology of a
landfill in operation can be much more complicated than
the case of a landfill that has been closed. This means that
percolate production in a landfill in which individual sections
are different with respect to state of operation can be
very different from those landfills where all sections are in
the same state.
