by表示有生命的所属,是由世界著名的艺术家们所画的,of表示无生命的所属,这样的东西一般老师在课堂上不会这么强调,这个靠自己平时多读课文,熟读重点语句建立起来的语感,英语语法,语感最重要,随着你学习语言时间的增加,你自己就会发现语言嘛,有时有自己的习惯用法,不是语法来解释的!
这里应该是简略了的说法，完整的应该是一个定语从句：...paintings which were painted by two world......,然后把谓语部分省去了

例如：The book (writtin) by him is interesting.
of表示所属关系。

用of时可以有两种解释：一是画是由世界著名艺术家画的，二是这是世界著名艺术家的画像。用by只表示上边说的第一种情况，消除了歧义。
