Ventilation in mines is very important to the health and safety of mine workers.In ancient times when mines were only shallow drift or shafts,the natural circulation of the air was needed in the mines.But as mines got deeper and bigger,artificial ventilation systems became necessary.Today mechancial ventilation systems are required for all underground coal mines.
Ventilation of a coal mine has two main purposes.One is to supply fresh air with a normal amount of oxygen to the miners.The second purpose of ventilation is to dilute and carry off carbon dioxide,dust and any methane or other gases present.
Ventilation at the working face is very important because gases,irrespirable dust,explosive dust,and fume,will occur at the face.The ventilation system must be able to dilute,make harmless and carry away burnable,explosive,noxious and harmful gases,dust,smoke and explosive fumes from the face.Ventilation is also important in moisture control.
