Few creations of big technology capture the imagination like giant dams. Perhaps it is humankind’s long suffering at the mercy of flood and drought that makes the ideal of forcing the waters to do our bidding so fascinating. But to be fascinated is also, sometimes, to be blind. Several giant dam projects threaten to do more harm than good. 几乎没有哪个重大技术创造像大坝那样激发人们的想象。也许正是人类长期以来经受洪水和干旱带来的巨大伤痛让驾驭洪水的想法特别令人痴迷。但是痴迷有时候也是盲目的。几座巨型大坝工程存在弊大于利的潜在危险。 读到这里时我脑海里立即浮现出家乡的三峡大坝，接着便暗暗的想：天啦，全真七子（考研英语命题人）真是胆大包天口出狂言，国家决策难道有错？研究生入学英语考试是国内最高级别的英语考试，命题人的命题思路一定深谙历年国家大事，具有映射暗示的特点，虽然全文未曾提及三峡大坝，但映射出来的就是当年大江截流的事件。全真七子说to be fascinated is also, sometimes, to be blind，岂不是和国家、党、人民唱反调？ 我慢慢读下去，第二段更加犀利的字眼出现了： The lesson from dams is that big is not always beautiful.
