Container metaphor is another kind of ontological metaphors. We are physical beings, bounded and set off from the rest of the world by the surface of our skins, and we experience the rest of the world as outside us (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980:29) each of us is a container with a bounding surface and an in-out orientation. And container metaphors project the in-out structure onto some abstract concepts, making it easier and clearer to comprehend the whole world. For instance, expressions like “He is in love.” And “We are out of trouble now.” are conceptualized as containers.
