were performed by the All-Union Lenin Order S.Ya.Zhuk Scientific-Research Institute for Design and Exploration.We tested 71 dam models,including three models built to a 1 :125 scale at the Scientific-Research Department of the All-Union Lenin Order S.Ya.Zhuk Scientific-Research Institute for D esign and Exploration and 43 models built to a 1 :200 scale at the V.V.Kuybyshev Moscow,Order of Red Labor Banner Civil Engineering Institute to study the stress-strain state under a basic loading combination with the model brought to failure by increasing the horizontal loads to determine the ultimate stability of the dam and its components.
Seventeen 1 :100-scale models and three 1 :50-scale models were tested at the B.E.Vedeneev All-Union
Scientific-Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering to investigate the stability of the compression zone by
bringing the models to failure with a simultaneous increase in horizontal and vertical loads to determine the ultimate strength of the material in the compression zone; finally,four 1 :100-scale models and 1 :200-scale models were tested by he Scientific-Research Department of the All-Union Lenin Order S.Ya.Zhuk Scientific-Research Institute for Design and Exploration to investigate the earthquake resistance of the dam.
The basic results of the stress state computations for the dam with a basic loading combination are presented in Table 3.
Normal compressive stresses do not exceed 40 kg/cm 2 and principal compressive stresses 60 kg/cm z at the downstream face.In the absence of cracking in the upstream face,normal tensile stresses do not exceed 5-7 kg/cm2; this is comparable to the computed tensile strength of the construction joints which was attained during construction of the Toktogul hydroelectric plant [8].In cases where cracking develops along several construction joints,the upstream face is virtually relieved of tensile stresses and a 10-15% increase in compressive stresses occurs on the downstream face.Similar results were also obtained during the model studies.
The computations and model studies indicate that the opening of cracks to a depth of,at most,1/4 the height of the cross section of the dam can be expected during the service period.The width of the opening may vary from 0.1 mm where crack spacings are of the order of 5 m to 0.3 mm where they are spaced 20 meters apart.
