The impression of Pride and Prejudice
The book《 Pride and Prejudice》 is written by Jane Austen , a famous English writer .
I still remember the first sentence in this
book .It reads :"It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in need of a wife ." The undertone is very clear : the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession. Love seems to be a perpetual theme all the time .And the main story in the book Pride and Prejudice is not a exception .The writer tells us her views and attitudes about love and marriage in this book.
The novel mainly tells us a love story between Elizabath and Mr. Darcy. It is at a ball that Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy for the first time and his pride and supercilious behaviors has left Elizabeth a terrible impression . This is the reason why Elizabeth's prejudice towards him begins .Besides this
reason ,there are two other incidents strengthens Elizabeth's prejudice .The first is that Wickham
speaks ill of Mr. Darcy, which makes Elizabeth thinks him is unworthy to making acquaince of.The second is that Elizabeth regards Darcy is the person who
separates her sister Jane and Mr. Bingley. But with the plots developing ,Darcy has changed himself and become no longer pride ,he also helps Jane and Bingley's reunion .All these factor change
Elizabeth's attitude towards Darcy. Eventually , Elizabeth and Darcy become a couple and lead a happy life from then on.
After reading this novel, I realize the
author—Jane Austen’s attitudes and views towards love and marriage: is unpractical to get married just for property, wealth and social status while would it be without caring about these elements. Marriage should be based on a real love and it is not a game! You can not just enjoy it without prudent
considerations. There is a gap which is called pride and prejudice between Elizabeth and Darcy , for they possess different society status and amount of property. But the ending which the author arranges that Elizabeth and Darcy break all the obstacles and
become a love couple suggests that true do exist no matter how different the background ,the status is .And I think this book will arouse people’s awareness of the importance of true love in a marriage.
Impressions of Pride and Prejudice
I?ve read a book called Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen during this winter holidays. Jane Austen was unmarried all her life. She was born in a mid-class family and was brought up in a comfortable environment with harmonious surroundings, so there?s not too many conflicts in her sight neither in her novel. In Pride and Prejudice she talked different ideas about love and marriage through different characters.
The novel has told an interesting story: Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman with an estate in Hertfordshire. He has five unmarried daughters but no sons while his inheritance must be inherited by a male, so Mrs. Bennet has been keen to seek husband for her daughters with great enthusiasm. One day the Bennets had a new neighbor called Bingley who was a wealthy bachelor and followed be the target of Mrs. Bennet. At a ball Bingley fell in love with Jane Bennet who?s the oldest daughter of the Bennets. Bingley?s friend Darcy also came to the ball and struck the sights, many girls liked him while he thought all of them couldn?t suit his preference, including Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy always shows others a impression
of pride, having found this Elizabeth began to h
ate Mr. Darcy. Before long Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth Bennett(second oldest daughter in the Bennets) because of her lovely behavior, while Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and has a prejudice about him. The official Wickham was welcomed by the villagers, and Elizabeth also took a shine to him. Wickham told Elizabeth that his father had been the steward of the Darcys. The old Darcy had regarded Wickham as his own son and showed more love to him than to Mr. Darcy. After the old Darcy died, the property should be inherited by Wickham was all deprived by Mr. Darcy, also was his pastorate. All this increased Eli?s prejudice about Mr. Darcy. At another ball Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth to dance with him, but Eli refused him. Eli?s elder male cousin Mr. Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennett's property by rules, he wanted to marry with one of the Bennets. Having known that Jane was already engaged with Mr. Bingley, he asked Elizabeth to marry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Eli?s friend. Mr. Collins was good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the help of Lady Catherine. Once hisfamily was invited to Rosings Garden by Lady Catherine. Elizabeth also went there with Mr. Collin and Charllote. There she met Mr. Darcy who?s Lady Catherine?s nephew. Later in a garden, Sir William told Eli about Mr. Darcy?s latest act of dissuading Mr. Bingley?s marring Jane Bennet which caused Eli?s exceedingly anger. Then Mr. Darcy came to the Collins? and confessed his love for Elizabeth, of course he was rejected impolitely. Afterwards Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Eli in order to remove her misunderstandings of him. Elizabeth?s uncle and aunt were also impressed by Mr. Darcy?s politeness. Gradually Eli?s prejudice of Mr. Darcy diappeared. Eventually they became couple.
The writer Jane Austen disclosed mid-class young ladies? different ideas of marriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems ,and this undoubtedly shows the writer?s idea about love and marriage: it?s wrong to get married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it be without caring about those elements.Jane Austen just attached great significance to marriage through her novel by telling people that marriage should
be regarded carefully cause it is not a game you could just enjoy without prudent consideration. She also wanted to deliver information that marriage should be based on real love between the lovers. The female subject Elizabeth is a mid-class girl, and Darcy proposed to her regardless of the gap between them, but Elizabeth refused because of his pride had formed Eli?s prejudice. Cause Darcy?s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn?t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. But later Darcy?s doings especially his change of the prideful manner eliminated Eli?s misunderstandings and prejudice about him, and Eli accepted his proposal. Those two opposite attitudes reflect female?s pursue of independent personality and equality. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life. There?re also Eli?s sisters? love stories served as contrasts to the female subject?s ideal marriage, such as Charlotte and Collin?s life: they do had a luxury life, but there?s no real love between them and this kind of marriage is
surely a tragedy of society.
Love and marriage is a constant topic among human, In Pride And Prejudice, Jane Austen told a story about five marriages for us in her rational and humorous writing tone, which explains the truth of marriage: love. Marriage should be based on love, while it can’t have access to happiness when just based on money or appearance. And a deeper knowledge is needed when we start our affection . Exclude vanity and prejudice, and think about each other's moral character objectively, and we can know someone better and more exact---- only good moral character deserves real love.
The two pairs lovers in the book, Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane and Bingley, mainly based their marriage on love and excellent moral character, though thinking about looks and family background to small extent. Elizabeth and Darcy's love story is most relished especially. During twisting journey from they hated each other to finally fell in love and got married, Elizabeth and Darcy gradually got to know each other, removed prejudice, and discard meaningless so-called face. Eventually they realized and fell in love with the virtues of each other in readers’ expectation and wishes. Furthermore that Elizabeth refused Darcy's courtship before accepting, still further show her defiance of marriages without love. On the contrary, Charlotte, Elizabeth's friend, who thinks she is not beautiful besides having no money, chose to combine with stupid and shallow Collins out of economic considerations, and lived a ensured but dull marriage life. Similarly, Elizabeth's sister, Lydia, as well as her father's marriage is unfortunate, for they were confused by the beauty of appearance, while ignoring the moral character. They would be bound to regret for their choice all their life .
All in all, we must be for love alignment in the face of marriage; and we must will be subject to moral character in the face of love; and we must be objective and fair in the face of judging the moral character.
Prejudice is the worst evil of man – my thoughts on "Pride and Prejudice"
After reading "Pride and Prejudice ", I have a kind of boundless feeling. The characters in the book seem to live in my heart, and they all seem to come out to be by my side. Moreover, shortcomings of them one by one were reflected by people around me. With the end of the book, the characters in the book each have a different ending, which also seems full of variables; however, I still like what attract me and dislike those disgust me.
The whole book begins with the story of the Bennets and also ends with the family life of the Bennets, and in the middle the whole book describes the emotional entanglements between the young men and women. Besides, the remarks and the attitudes of the people around the Bennets, also from one side reflects the social form of that time - the prejudice that exists at all times between people, and the arrogance of the upper stratum. The end of the story is really satisfactory, but the process is extremely bumpy. Throughout the text, almost everyone has a bias to others precisely because of which, the story twists and turn.
For people who have suspicions, there will not be any loss whereas those who were suspected have to live in the shadows and can not understand why they get uneven treatment. Darcy seems to be such a role because the character from childhood is brought up to feel arrogant that lots of people are parroting, wishing they could have put more demeaning on him. But no one is willing to put aside their own prejudices and understand the authenticity of these rumors. Even Elizabeth who detests unfair things, becomes to hate Darcy and thinks the rumor is naturally true just because Darcy doesn’t invite her to dance. For a long period of time, Elizabeth with prejudice communicates with Darcy. At the same time, because of prejudice, Darcy helps Bingley make the wrong decision to not marry Jane’s elder sister, resulting in the love of Jane and Bingley almost died. Naturally, nothing good result comes between Darcy and Elizabeth but mutual disgust and more prejudices.
As far as I am concerned, I always think that I am a reasonable person, but seeing some descriptions of the book I can not help but feel some exaggeration. However when I finish the whole book I find that I, more than once, produced suspicion and disgust to Darcy. Things become different when I find out that Darcy was misunderstood and I feel regret for my own prejudice. Prejudice comes from people’s subjections, or is close to the attitudes of people. Some people are ready to have a prejudice against people or things because of their own subjection, or more specifically, because of idealism. These people are willing to evaluate things with their own idea to be the foundation. For example, Miss Bingley never fails to be malicious to Elizabeth, even Jean. In the final analysis, she just doesn't want to find the truth with her own eyes, or she doesn't care about what kind of result this prejudice will have –if it has nothing to do with herself, it’s surely good, and if it can bring her interests, it’s much better. And the other kind of man is too stupid to believe people’s speech or attitude as Mr. Bingley, excessively believing Darcy's opinion. For his own suspicions, he almost missed his true love. Elizabeth is the same, she is more willing to be with Wickham, and becomes more and more hateful to Darcy.
The book embodies the person's moods all the time and gradually produces acute contradictions, making readers have to chose a position and then take a tumble of consciousness to the fact that he should also be infected with prejudice emotions. But whether the book makes a person infected with these emotions, or emotional itself exists and only books make your more true expression comes out, brings various opinions of different readers.
Reflection of Pride and Prejudice
I’ve read it during this semester. This book, written by Jane Austen, is published by China International Broadcasting Publishing House in 2010 and has 475 pages.
Jane Austen is an English famous writer. Her compositions focus on country females’ marriage and their life. She describes her apperceive to the world with her own special perspective and humor words. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote this novel, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively.
The main idea is: Mr. Bennet has five daughters. With the daughters’ grow older, finding husbands for their daughters become Mrs. Bennet’s priority thing. Their family belongs to middle class. Mrs. Bennet is a very vulgar and power person. Their neighbor Charles Bingley is a single man who possesses lots of property. And Mrs. Bennet urges her husband to visit Bingley. In her mind, she has listed him as a son-in-law. At a ball, Mrs. Bennet tries her best to introduce her daughters to rich person actively. Bingley’s friend called Fitzwilliam Darcy, an imposing, wealthy, noble and dignified man. He becomes a focus for many beautiful girls. Mrs. Bennet’s is very eager to introduce her daughters to middle and upper class people. Her behaviors are very comical, and she is like a clown for Mr. Darcy. He feels very disgust with Mrs. Bennet’s behaviors and also looks down upon her. But these girls find Darcy’s shortcomings soon. He takes up with Elisabeth; she is Mrs. Bennet’s second daughter. Because of many complex misunderstands they missed each other. Then, Elisabeth receives a letter from Darcy and they overcome their prejudices to each other. At last they fall in love and Elisabeth’s sisters also find their true love. And the novel ends in a happy atmosphere.
In the eighteenth century, the British Empire is in the peak period. But the British social’s influence spread the whole country. For example, people’s views about snobbishness, vanity and ideas on marriage. The condition of marriage is the man should have a good social position and the woman should have good dowry. So their combination is happy to their family. Everything is based on money and social position during that time. In my opinion, it looks like marriage is a combination of money. But marital relationship is based on respect and affection but not money. The author opposes marry for money and emphasizes importance of marriage.
Austen uses irony art permeates the whole novel and throughout the development of plot. On the other hand, the language description and the figures’ psychological activity are very
picturesque. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” The author uses humorous satire exaggerating technique, reflects Mrs. Bennet’s false and deceit. In one word, this book is an illustration of the society at that time.
In this novel, the whole structure is very precise, the figures’ characteristic are distinct and full of their own features. It shows this novel’s unique charming. On the other hand, it reflects the author’s artistic and ideological content. So it is worth reading.
