In February 2009,two bronze sculptures looted from the Old Summer Palace during the Second Opium War in 1860 were auctioned by international auction house Christie's.On 25 Feb 2009 the disputed 18th-century fountainheads — heads of a rat and a rabbit — were sold to a Mr.Cai Mingchao(蔡铭超),an adviser to China's National Treasures Fund,which seeks to retrieve looted treasures by foreign invaders during the Qing Dynasty,for 28 million euros as part of an auction of art works owned by the late French designer Yves Saint Laurent.The buyer has then refused to pay the sum bid,claiming that he was bidding on moral and patriotic grounds.China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage had condemned the sale of the two bronzes and said it would affect Christie's interests in the country,ordering tighter inspections of all cultural relics that the auction house seeks to bring in or out of mainland China.China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage had stated that the auction of the bronzes "goes against the spirit of relevant international conventions and the international common understanding that cultural relics should be returned to their country of origin."

Carina Lau to Play Emperor Wu Zetian

Liu didn't go to any magic school. He learned by himself. He worked hard at it. Now he is a great magician.
When Liu was seven, he saw a coin trick in a big store. At that moment Liu decided to learn magic.
Liu practiced hard to improve his skills. Then one day he was able to put on a show for his class.
"I saw the surprise on everyone's face. It was cool."
Liu still practices hard today. He may spend three years working on a new show.

During his race to the highest post in the US, Obama talked about his background. He called for a United States of America, rather than a white America or a black America.
“Obama’s success has made Martin Luther King’s dream come true. That is: A man should not *be judged (判断) by the color of his skin (皮肤), but by the content of his character,” wrote ABC news.

THOSE who watched Taiwan's TV drama Meteor Garden (《流行花园》), eight years ago, remember it fondly. The Japanese manga (漫画) based series made stars out of Barbie Xu and the idol (偶像) group F4 and its members Jerry Yan, Vaness Wu, Vic Zhou, and Ken Chu.
But the TV drama's popularity didn't end there. First, Japan was unhappy that someone else had stolen the limelight (抢风头，抢镜) from their own manga. So in 2005 and 2007, they produced their own Hana Yori Dango. South Korea then aired their own version, Boys Before Flowers, soon afterward at the end of 2008. And last month, Hunan TV began filming their reproduction Meteor Rain in Xiamen. The lead roles will be played by Happy Boys Yu Haoming and Wei Chen, and several other newcomers.
Perhaps because the Taiwan version (版本) was so popular and there have already been so many re-adaptations (改编), Hunan TV's remaking has led to plenty of discussion and complaints among netizens (网民).
According to them the Taiwan version is "first love", the Japanese version "is good", and the South Korean version "fashionable" though "full of kimchi (泡菜) flavor". So what is the Hunan TV version left with?
Many students at Xiamen University are also angry about the re-adaptation, as most scenes will be shot on their campus. They think the new series might affect their university's image (形象), as the show is mostly about love and violence and students from rich families.
However, the producers say they are going to remove a lot of the violence. They also plan to change the plot, turning what is a romantic idol drama into an inspirational (励志的) show.

The world has been watching US President Barack Obama closely since he took office in January this year to see whether he makes good on his promises about the economy, foreign policy and health care.
But closer to home, he has also been under pressure from his two daughters to keep one particular pledge: to give them a new dog as a reward for coping with his election campaign.
On Tuesday the nation's hotly-anticipated 'first puppy' was unveiled. Named Bo, the shaggy-haired pooch is a six-month-old Portuguese water dog which is black with a white chest, white goatee and white paws.
"He's got star quality," said President Obama as he and his family paraded the dog on the White House lawn in front of reporters.
He then joked, "I finally got a friend. It took some time," referring to Harry Truman's famous line, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog."
The breed of dog is special in that it doesn't shed hair, and so is less aggravating to his 10-year-old daughter Malia who suffers from allergies.
Water dogs are also bred to be strong swimmers and even have webbed feet, but as seven-year-old daughter Sasha pointed out to reporters, "He doesn't know how to swim."
And while it may be the nation's "first puppy", President Obama left reporters in no doubt about who was top dog in the household. When asked where Bo would sleep, Obama replied, "Not in my bed".
The dog was a gift from close family friend Senator Edward Kennedy. He said the breed would be a "perfect fit for the Obama family", as the dogs have a "can-do and hopeful spirit".


China denies govt involvment in relics bidding(Xinhua)
Updated: 2009-03-06 13:44 Comments(4) PrintMailBEIJING -- Head of China's cultural heritage bureau on Friday denied government involvement in the bidding of two looted Chinese relics at Christie's auction in Paris, saying the bidder was acting privately.
"The bidding was completely a personal behavior," Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH), told Xinhua.
Shan said the cultural heritage department had no idea of the bidding until the bidder identified himself Monday.
Shan said on the sidelines of annual session of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body.
China had tried repeatedly to dissuade Christie's from auctioning the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) bronze rabbit and rat heads sculptures, which were looted from Yuanmingyuan, the Old Summer Palace, by Anglo-French allied forces during the Second Opium War in 1860. But the efforts failed.
The two relics were auctioned for 14 million euros (17.92 million U.S. dollars) each last week. In response, China's cultural heritage authorities ordered strict checks of all exports and imports by Christie's in China.
On Monday, Cai Mingchao, a Chinese antiques collector, identified himself as the winning bidder. But he said that he would not pay because the two relics might not be able to enter China following SACH's strict checks.
Shan said the new order only applies to the cultural relics that Christie's submitted to the Chinese cultural departments for entry or exit checks and it does not limit the return of looted Chinese cultural relics.
Shan also denied reports that Christie's once suggested the Chinese government buy the two relics at a low price.
Christie's did say it was willing to cooperate with the Chinese government, but it never offered to sell the two relics to China at a low price, Shan said.
The auction triggered wide protest in China. But Christie's argued that the Pierre Berge-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation held legal ownership of the fountainheads.
SACH said China would not accept what it called the illegal possession of the two sculptures and would "continue to seek the return of the sculptures by all means in accord with related international conventions and Chinese laws."
Even though efforts to stop the auction have failed, Shan said such efforts have aroused public concern over and participation in the retrieving of lost cultural relics and would have a positive impact on similar efforts in the future.
He said China will improve the protection and management of cultural relics and tighten border control to prevent cultural relics from being illegally taken out of China.
The government has already set up 14 offices across the country for the scrutiny of cultural relics exports, he said.
More efforts will also be made to collect information of China's lost relics, including those from the Yuanmingyuan, said Shan, a member of the CPPCC National Committee.
He said China will also improve legislation on the crackdown on the stealing, illegal excavation and smuggling of cultural relics, so as to provide legal support for efforts to retrieve lost relics from overseas.
Diplomatic measures and international cooperation will also be strengthened to facilitate the return of relics illegally taken out of China, said Shan.
An estimated 1.64 million Chinese relics are owned by foreign museums, according to SACH figures. Even more than that are owned by private collectors. A great number were looted, stolen and smuggled out of China between the 1860s and 1949 when the country was subjected to colonial invasion and civil wars.
