The Great Symbol Of China---Dragon
As we all know, dragon is the symbol of our great China. No matter wherever we are, we will say we are the offspring of the dragon with great proud. Then what’s the dragon? What does it look like? And is there really a dragon existing in the world? Lots of people don’t really know about the real meaning of dragon. In fact, the “dragon” is only an imaginary animal, it’s only a symbol created by the ancient people. In other words, it is a “totem”, which is made by Indians in America. The totem is the thing which the ancient people trusted and depended on.
Where does the dragon come from? This has been a question for thousands of years. In some research, it is said that the dragon first appeared in Shang period; and about more than 2300 years ago, in the poem Ask the sky written by the great poet Quyuan, he has also mentioned the “dragon”. On this question, no one really knows when did “dragon” appear. But what we can make sure is that the dragon has existed for a long time, maybe at least 8000 years.
Although we can’t find out when did dragon first appeared, but we know that dragon is a totem in the ancient time. For lack of scientific knowledge, the ancient people couldn’t understand some natural phenomenon. They always believe that these phenomenon are created by the god or some other unknown power. So they chose some animals as their forefather, and preyed them every day or in a certain time. When they preyed them, they admired them very much, and they would show them a great many food. Generally, the picture of the totem would be carved on the tree or the stone. These pictures may be exaggerated, and these exaggeration could reflect the differences between different tribes. And in some pictures, some character of the dragon first appeared. This is called Yuanlongwen. Until the Shang period, the “ancient dragon” became the “real dragon”. At this time, dragon is carved on the pots. And the symbol of the real dragon is its “jiao”. About the character of the dragon, there are lots of opinions. Someone says that it’s originated of the snake, and someone says that it has some relationship with pig. In a word, it has the body of the snake, the head of the pig, jiao of the deer, ears of the cow, beard of the sheep and lin of the fish. It is the mixture of many animals. The pinions of the professors will show us a picture of the ancient society: in the ancient time, the Huaxia tribe in the Yellow River area which took the snake as their totem conquered other tribes and combined all the tribes. At the same time, it absorbed other totems and created the totem of dragon.
In the long history, there are lots of stories about the dragon. For example, there are four kings of dragon in the story living in the four seas. They had the power to control the rainfall. But if they rained at random, they will also be punished. And another is about the dragon helping to build the Great Wall. It is said that in the Ming period, a general is ordered to build the Great Wall to defend the enemies. When he got there, he didn’t watch carefully and then chose a place carelessly. He ordered to put all the tools on the ground and wanted to start the next day. But the next morning, when all the people woke up, they suddenly found that all the tools disappeared. They hurried to search everywhere, at last, they found them in the back hillside. The general was very angry and asked the soldier who was on duty yesterday evening about the matter. The soldier was very afraid and said that he knew nothing, but he said that when he was on duty in the midnight, a strange wind blew and an ugly animal appeared in the black cloud. Then a short moment later, all the tools disappeared. The general didn’t believe what he said and he went see the tools himself. When he stood on the hill, he suddenly found that this is a very good place, and the situation is very suitable to build the Great Wall. Then he realized that this is with the help of the great dragon. He kneed to the ground and thanks very much to the dragon. For such a case, a famous part of the Great Wall was finished, and it has well protected the people of the country.
As everyone knows, Chine always consider ourselves to be the offspring of the dragon. But how did the idea come about? In the ancient legendary stories, except the one get fire out of the wood, the most famous one is about Fuxi and Nvwa. It is said that Fuxi and Nvwa were all with human head and snaked body, and they got married. And on the other hand, Nvwa made the people with sand. So the Chinese believe that Nvwa is our forefather, and the dragon is just like the snake, so it became the totem of the ancient tribes. And then dragon also becomes our forefather. Because dragon is admired by lots of people, we are very proud of being the offspring of the dragon. As it is sung in a song, “there is a dragon in the oriental, it’s name is China. We are the offspring of the dragon forever.” If you are a Chinese with a Chinese heart, you may sing the song proudly.
On the other hand, the dragon does not only belong to China. There is also dragon existing in the western world. In China, dragon could bring good luck, and it can make the rainfall for the people to get the harvest. But different from Chinese dragon, in westerners’ eyes, dragon is an unlucky animal. As their imagine, the dragon may has three or more heads, and it could make fire from its mouth. It may does harm to the people, and burns the people’s houses. More seriously, it would eat people. In a word, it’s the symbol of bad luck. So sometimes the westerners couldn’t understand why the Chinese admire the dragon so much. Maybe this could reflect the differences on the culture between the East and the West. Whatever it is, the spirit of the dragon will lasts forever.
As a Chinese, as the descendent of the dragon, we should hand down the spirit of the dragon generation by generation, and let all the world know the “dragon culture” of our country.
