Well,I listened to my mother and I joined a typing pool
Listened to my lover and I put him through his school
If I listen to the boss,I'm just a bloody fool

I been a sucker ever since I was a baby

But I'll fight them as a woman,not a lady

She might means that she used to compromise herself for others, depending on and complying them by saying that "she's been a sucher".
Getting tired of obeying ohters, she want to be herself and stick to her own principles, never conceding any more.
Therefore, she says she want to be a woman, what she is right now, instead of being a lady just as her mother has told her to be.
Saying that she wanna be a woman will more explicitly express her feeling of been herself, which cannot be conveyed by saying to be a lady.
In addition, the word "lady" is connected with the meaning of being graceful, compliant,and consealing one's true characters, which is in confict with her intention right now.
